Sizes S-XL (waist 24'' / 61cm - 46'' / 117cm)

Difficulty: Easy

The Frances Rump is a padded 'bum' or 'rump' that will help you create the fashionable full bottomed silhouette of the last quarter of the 18th century.  Based on extant examples and depictions of rumps in caricatures, it's the perfect accompaniment to the Augusta Stays and the Amalia Jacket.

The type and amount of filling you use, and which quilted sections you fill, allow you to customise the shape to help you achieve the exact silhouette you desire.

The Frances Rump pattern features historically accurate construction techniques, and detailed notes on the materials, filling, and stitches used.

If accuracy isn't a concern the pattern is easily adapted for machine sewn construction.

View A is a larger rump that creates the full-bottomed, round-hipped shape fashionable between 1775-1787.

View B is a smaller rump that creates the back-focused silhouette, with fullness concentrated only over the rear, fashionable from 1785-1795.

Recommended Fabrics:

Outer: very tightly woven midweight fabrics in linen (most common), wool (less common) or cotton (least common).  There are also examples of rumps in linen with silk covers.
Filling: loose crin/ horsehair, loose wool, granulated cork, down/feathers, loose cotton, or loose poly cushion fill.
Samples:
View A is shown in rust brown linen.  It is filled with feathers and has a 3/4'' / 2cm linen waist tape.
View B is shown in ivory linen.  It is filled with wool rovings, and has a 1/2'' / 1.4cm cotton waist tape.
Elisabeth (in floral jacket and red petticoat) is wearing View A under her Amalia Jacket.
Jenni (in blue jacket and white petticoat) is wearing View B under her Amalia Jacket.
